Several years ago, the Federal Government recognized problems providing quality, convenient, and affordable health care to rural and under-served populations. This problem existed because qualified physicians were concentrated in metropolitan and urban areas thus creating a “misdistribution problem.” To address this issue the United States Congress enacted Public Law 95-210, which provides certain incentives for health care organizations and hospitals to build, maintain, and staff “Rural Health Clinics.” To alleviate the shortage of physicians, the federal government mandated the utilization of mid-level health care providers who serve to extend the practice of qualified physicians.
In 2001, Huron Medical Centerand its Board of Directors accepted the challenge of providing quality, convenient, and affordable health care to the citizens of Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac counties by instituting a Rural Health Initiative. Since that time, a “Federally Designated Rural Health Clinic” has been established in the community of Ubly.
The clinic provides a full spectrum of quality family health care performed by nationally certified and state licensed, Physician Assistant.
